Population
The greater El Paso Region is positioned in southwestern Texas and South-Central New Mexico on the U.S./Mexican border. The region is a blend of urban, suburban, rural, and undeveloped sectors, encompassing an estimated population of 2.6 million. El Paso is the largest metro area on the U.S./Mexican border and the region constitutes the largest bi-national metropolitan area in the Western Hemisphere with 82.2% of its population being Hispanic. This geographic location makes the El Paso area unique. It is the nation’s only bilingual and bicultural metropolitan area where fluency in English and Spanish is needed in many customer service and management occupations and desired in others. The picture below depicts the greater El Paso Regional population of over 2.6 million. Over 1 million of these people reside on the US side of the border in El Paso, Dona Ana, and Otero Counties.

Growth Projections
The recent, anticipated growth within the El Paso region offers opportunities for both retail and real estate development. This section of the REDCo website was designed with retailers and developers in mind.
Between 2000 and 2040, the population of El Paso County is projected to grow by 69.7 percent. This projected growth exceeds the nation’s rate of growth and is parallel with that of Texas. Based on U.S. Census Bureau population estimates and projections, El Paso is ranked the 18th city with the largest population increase from July 2007 to July 2008. These projections do not take into account the significant growth taking place at Fort Bliss.
