PUBLIC EDUCATION
There are nine public school districts in the El Paso area, with a total enrollment of 177,063 and 11,080 graduates for the 2010−2011 academic year. There are 55 private schools, with a combined total enrollment of 9,783 students.
District Information
El Paso County is served by nine school districts, four of which serve portions of the city of El Paso (marked by asterisks):

Clint Independent School District
El Paso Independent School District
Located in El Paso, Texas, the El Paso Independent School District (EPISD) is the largest district in the Texas Education Agency’s Educational Service Center. With more than 64,000 students on 94 campuses, EPISD is also the tenth-largest district in Texas and the 61st-largest district in the United States. It is also El Paso’s largest employer, with more than 9,000 employees, and has an annual operating budget of $461 million.
Ysleta Independent School District
From its humble beginnings in the 1930s as a rural education district with one high school and a handful of middle and elementary schools, the Ysleta Independent School District (YISD) has grown into one of the major school districts in the state, with nearly 44,000 students and 8,000 administrators, teachers and staff. The district has 62 campuses, which cover an urban area stretching from Northeast El Paso to the east and southeast areas of the city. A nationally recognized area of historic missions, homes and Indian settlements can be found within the district’s boundaries.
Socorro Independent School District
The Socorro Independent School District (SISD) is located in the southeastern portion of El Paso County, Texas. It serves Socorro, Horizon City and the eastern portion of the city of El Paso. The district covers 136 square miles of El Paso County. The district’s northern boundary is the Texas–New Mexico line, with the Rio Grande acting as its southern boundary. SISD is one of the fastest-growing school districts in Texas. The district has 19 elementary schools, six Pk - 8 schools, eight middle schools, seven high schools, one alternative school and a
community-education program. The district employs more than 7,000 community members and serves over 41,000 students.
Canutillo Independent School District
Located in northwest El Paso County, Canutillo residents voted to incorporate the Canutillo Independent School District in 1959 and graduated its first senior class four years later in 1963. The District has five elementary schools, two middle schools, one high school, an early college high school, and an alternative education program. It served 5,829 students during the 2009-2010 school year. With an annual operating budget of over $45 million, CISD employs 410 teachers, 85 educational aides, 275 auxiliary personnel, 18 campus and 11 central office administrators, and 67 professional support staff.

TAKS Test

The Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) test is a standardized test used in primary and secondary schools in the state of Texas. The test assesses students’ attainment of reading, writing, mathematics, science and social-studies skills required under Texas education standards. See the chart above for details.

ACT
The ACT, or American College Testing, is a standardized collegiate examination. The ACT is used as an indicator of academic aptitude and readiness to enter college. The test covers English, mathematics, science and reading, and includes an optional writing test. See the chart above for details.

SAT
The SAT Reasoning Test, much like the ACT, is a standardized collegiate test that assesses critical reading, mathematics and writing skills; each of these three sections has a possible score of 800 points.

H.S. Graduation Rates
The graduation rate is the number of high school graduates for a given year divided by the number of eighth graders enrolled five years prior. A significant number of students continue their high school education or attain their GED certificates. See the chart above for details.

Universities
The El Paso region is home to nine post-secondary institutions, including two four-year and graduate post-secondary institutions — The University of Texas at El Paso and New Mexico State University. You’ll find seven two-year community colleges, professional and technical schools. The region’s four-year universities enroll nearly 40,600 students annually, while the two-year institutions enroll approximately 33,700 annually.
The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP)
With an enrollment of approximately 22,600 students, UTEP offers 76 baccalaureate, 83 master’s and 16 doctoral programs within its academic colleges: Business, Education, Engineering, Health Sciences, Liberal Arts, Science, School of Nursing, and University College.
UTEP is currently employing an aggressive facilities-construction program to accommodate its continued growth and to build the most technologically advanced classrooms and laboratories in the nation.
According to Hispanic Business magazine, UTEP’s College of Engineering consistently ranks among the top five schools awarding bachelor’s degrees to Hispanics and has the number-one graduate engineering school for Hispanics in the country. In their September 2010 issue Hispanic Business also ranked UTEP’s MBA program as No. ! among the top 10 business graduate programs for Hispanics in the nation.
Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center at El Paso (TTUHSC)
TTUHSC is an independently accredited, comprehensive, health-sciences university with component schools of Allied Health, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy. TTUHSC provides West Texas with high-quality, accessible healthcare services and access to educational opportunities.
TTUHSC opened the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine in El Paso in 2009. This four-year, research-focused institute is the only medical school to be accredited in the U.S. in 25 years and the only medical school located on the U.S.-México border. Four research centers of excellence will focus on Hispanic health in the areas of:
- Cancer
- Neurodegenerative diseases
- Infectious diseases
- Diabetes
- Obesity.
New Mexico State University (NMSU)
Located in Las Cruces, New Mexico, NMSU has an annual enrollment of approximately 18,500 students. NMSU offers a wide variety of programs through its academic colleges: Agriculture & Home Economics, Arts & Sciences, Business, Education, Engineering, Extended Learning, Health & Social Services, Honors, and the Graduate School.
NMSU offers 81 baccalaureate, 56 master’s and 24 doctoral degree programs, and is the only university in New Mexico that offers an honors college and programs in aerospace, industrial and surveying engineering. In the annual Forbes.com list of America’s Best Colleges for 2009, NMSU placed in the top third of the 600 universities ranked across the country. Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine rated NMSU among the nation’s top 30 universities for Hispanic and Native American students.

Community Colleges/Career Schools
With six locations throughout the region, El Paso Community College (EPCC) is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the nation. It currently serves more than 30,000 students each semester.
EPCC continues to receive national recognition for its educational excellence while offering a diversity of programs relevant to today’s workforce needs. The college offers 130 associate-degree and certificate-of-completion programs and offers more than 350 personal-enrichment/continuing-education courses. Coursework at EPCC is transferable to any Texas college or university.

Other Institutions of Higher Learning
Technical schools within the region, including Western Technical College, offer certificates and associate degrees. Branch campuses include Webster University, Howard Payne University and the University of Phoenix.
