The City of El Paso is served by three
school districts.
El Paso
Independent School District
Located
in El Paso, Texas, the El Paso Independent School District is the largest
district in the Texas Education Agency's Educational Service Center - Region
19. With more than 63,000 students in 92 campuses, EPISD also is the seventh
largest district in Texas and the 57th largest district in the United States.
It also is El Paso's largest employer with more than 9,000 employees and has an
annual operating budget of $403 million. (www.episd.org)
Ysleta
Independent School District
From its beginnings
in the 1930's as a rural education district with one high school and a handful
of middle and elementary schools, the Ysleta Independent School District has
grown into one of the major school districts in the state with nearly 50,000
students and 6000 administrators, teachers and staff. The district has 58
campuses, which sprawl through an urban area stretching from northeast El Paso
to the East and Southeast areas of the city. A nationally recognized area of
historic missions, homes and Indian settlements can be found within the

Socorro Independent School District
The Socorro Independent School District is located in the southeastern portion
of El Paso County, Texas. It serves Socorro, Horizon City, and the
eastern portion of the City of El Paso. The District covers 136 square miles of
El Paso County. The District's northern boundary is the Texas/New Mexico line
its southern boundary is the Rio Grande River. SISD is part of Region 19.
SISD is one of the fastest growing school Districts in the State of Texas. The
District has twenty-one elementary schools, seven middle schools, four high
schools, one early childhood center, one alternative school and a community

The surrounding areas within El Paso County are served by six
additional school districts. They are Canutillo Independent School
District,
Clint Independent School District,
San Elizario Independent School District,
Fabens Independent School District,
Tornillo Independent School District, and
Anthony Independent School District.

Average
ACT Scores for Selected High Schools
As
seen in the chart below, El Paso area schools are competitive in their ACT
scores and on par with state and national averages. Coronado High School
was higher than both the state and national average for the 2005-2006 academic
year. Chapin High School, Silva Health Magnet School, and Americas High
School were right on par or higher than that same state average in their ACT
scores.

Average
SAT Scores for Selected High Schools
As
depicted in the chart below, El Paso area SAT scored are less competitive than
ACT scores. However, there is still a push for participation in the SAT
exam. For example, Ysleta Independent School District requires all
seniors to take the SAT. Eastwood High School, seen below, is a part of
the YISD.

Completion
Rates for El Paso Region
El
Paso high schools completion rates are on par with the other major regions in
Texas. The comparison is based upon completion II rates which are the
percentage of students who graduated or earned their GED by August 31 of the
year reported. "Leavers" are excluded from those who did not complete
high school. "Leavers" include students who moved to other educational
settings, who were expelled, who are withdrawn by CPS, who enter health care
facilities, who have been incarcerated, who return to home countries, and who
are deceased. In 2006, El Paso's completion rate was 90.7% which is
slightly lower than the state average as well as above the San Antonio and
Dallas regions.

Graduation
Rates for El Paso Region
For
graduation rates, El Paso is slightly above the state average. El Paso's
graduation rate in 2006 was 78.3% which is above the graduation rates of the
San Antonio, Dallas, and Houston regions. The graduation rates are the
number of high school graduates for a given year divided by the number of 8th
graders enrolled 5 years prior as 8th graders.
