El Paso is home to Fort Bliss, the Army's Air Defense Artillery Center and
School. Fort Bliss extends over 1,119,700 acres, much of it in southern New
Mexico.
Each year, there are more than 100 countries which receive air defense
artillery training at Fort Bliss. The installation is also home to the U.S.
Army Sergeants Major Academy, Joint Task Force-North, William Beaumont Army
Medical Center, and others.
The Fort hosts more than 15,000 active military personnel, and employs nearly
7,000 civilians.
Holloman Air Force Base (HAFB) is located in Alamogordo, New Mexico, and is
home to the 49th Tactical Fighter Wing and the German Air Force Tactical
Training Center (TTC).
The TTC provides aircrew training in the F-4F Phantom II. Tenant Units include
46th Test Group, 4th Space Control Squadron, and the 82nd Aerial Target
Squadron, among others. HAFB hosts 3,429 active military personnel, and
employs 827 civilians. In 2005, the Base supported 6,700 retirees
and 3,599 active duty military dependents.
Dona Ana County is home to White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) with the
headquarters located 20 miles east of Las Cruces, New Mexico and 45 miles north
of El Paso, Texas. WSMR supports development and test programs for
the Army, Navy, Air Force, NASA, other government agencies, allied countries,
and private industry. Currently, WSMR has 30 entities that reside there
for a base population of 6,237. The Range has 460 active duty and
762 family members. The Range also employs 2,553 civil servants and 3,224
contract personnel.
